Biobide consolidates its presence in the 56ª SOT Annual Congress –Society of Toxicology – in USA

Representatives of Biobide (Bionaturis Group) will attend once again the SOT Annual Congress –Society of Toxicology-  in USA (SOT EXPO), considered the most relevant event in the sector. After a broad participation in 2016 edition, the specialized company in zebrafish consolidates its presence in this forum with an booth (nº 822) and the presentation of two scientific posters (P160 y P161).

The R&D Management Director, Arantza Muriana; the Business Development Manager, Maitane Ipiñazar; and the Study Director, Ainhoa Alzualde, will be the delegates in SOT that, additionally, will be held from 12nd to 16th, March, in Maryland, where Biobide’s subsidiary is located. “We confirm in this forum every year that the use of zebrafish as alternative model in the preclinical area is gaining more and more relevance in sectors such as pharmaceutical, chemical and cosmetic ones. The high-level meetings and the contact with new potential and international customers are into our daily experience in this congress in which, with our expertise and our constant flexibility to our customers requirements, we have reached an outstanding presence”,  our delegates has explained.

In fact, USA is a very important market for Biobide, which signed a contract with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIH-NIEHS), the most well-regarded health institution in the country.

“Evaluated the Effects in the Locomotor Activity vs. Morphological Alterations by Different Types of Biocides in Zebrafish Embryos” and “Toxicity Profiling Using a Battery of Assays in Zebrafish Embryos Including Teratogenicity, Behavior, Cardiotoxicity, Ototoxicity, and Hepatotoxicity” are the two posters that will be presented on March, 15th from 1:15 PM to 4:30 PM and will show the expertise of the Basque company in this area.

The International Journal of Molecular Sciences publishes a research with the participation of Biobide

The International Journal of Molecular Sciences has just published the scientific paper titled “Transcriptional and Behavioral Responses of Zebrafish Larvae to Microcystin-LR Exposure”, in which the Study Director of Biobide (Bionaturis Group), Ainhoa Alzualde, has taken part. It is a collaboration with the Ioannina University (Greece) that determines how the zebrafish is affected by the exposure to this toxic substance generated by cyanobacteria (also know as blue-green algae). Among the results of this research, they could confirm alterations in the vision and behaviour of zebrafish, such as the hypoactivity in the dark.

Thanks to this research, the scientists have explored the metabolic pathways that can be affected by the microcystin-LR in sublethal concentrations. In other words, they have researched different ways this toxin can affect zebrafish and, in consecuence, also mammals.

Zebrafish is showing again that it is a suitable and profitable model to study toxicity in several substances.

Biobide hits September with three international events

Eurotox 2016, the European Teratology Society (ETS) Meeting and the IV International Congress of Research and Innovation of Neurodegenerative Diseases are the three international events for Biobide -Bionaturis Group- to hit September. The first one, organized by the European Societies of Toxicology, will be held in Seville on 4-7th, September, with the theme “Protecting Public and Environmental Health by Understanding and Communicating Toxicology”.

The organization of this international event, which has received more than 900 abstracts to be presented as posters, has planned six Continuing Education Courses, 16 Symposia, 10 Workshops as well as Keynote Lectures from key scientists. More than 50 companies have provided their supports as exhibitors. Biobide will be one of them with the booth number 18, assisted by Arantza Muriana, the R&D Management Director of Biobide.

“The presence of Biobide in international forums is essential to be informed and updated about the news and needs of our sector as well as in the business field strictly. On the other hand, these events confirm us the increasing interest of companies and institutions in the use of zebrafish as an alternative animal model, which makes us improve our services constantly and, then, our competitiveness”, Arantza Muriana has stated.

ETS Meeting, in Dublin

The second meeting in Biobide’s schedule in September will be in Dublin (Ireland) for the 44 edition of the European Teratology Society (ETS) Meeting, held on 11-14th. This event will celebrate lectures and forums about relevant topics such as maternal health in pregnancy or the regulatory updates about developmental and reproductive toxicology.

During this high-level event, Biobide will present three scientific posters titled “An inter-laboratory validation of the zebrafish embryo assay for the detection of developmental toxicity”, “Standarized Light/Dark preference test for anxiety and stress research using […]

Biobide strengthens its participation in international events

The schedule of Biobide scientists this spring is taken by very relevant international events in the sector. This week, the company acquired by Bionaturis Group and specialized in the use of zebrafish as animal model, presents two scientific posters in the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Europe 26th Annual Meeting, 22-26 May 2016, at La Cite in Nantes, France.  Biobide also participates in the conference Measuring Behaviour 2016, hold in Dublin, with the research about the relationship between stress and exposure to light in this animal model.

R&D Management Director at Biobide, Arantza Muriana, will lead the presentation in SETAC 2016 of the posters titled ‘Testing toxicity of graphene oxide in zebrafish embryos’ and ‘Toxicity Profiling of Flame Retardants in Zebrafish’, both using zebrafish as animal model for varied toxicity and efficacy assays. The first one addresses the study of toxicity of graphene oxide, a very common material to produce goods used in our daily life, while the second one tackles the study of teratogenicity (possibilities of malformation in the development of the fetus in pregnant women), cardiotoxicity, hepatotoxicity and behavioral alterations in some flame retardants compounds found in everyday household products, to which people are regularly exposed.

In addition to the presentation of these posters, Arantza Muriana and the Study Director, Virginia Caballero, will respond the large number of applications for one-to-one meetings in this event, considered the most important one in this specialized area in Europe. More than 2,000 scientists from 60 different countries will attend this event addressing relevant topics such as the climate change and contaminants or the production of cosmetics, among others.
